Lowline

Proposals:
Lowline National Conservation Area
Agencies: USFS
Counties: Gunnison
Nearest City of Town: Crested Butte
Description:
This small area just east of the northern portion of the West Elks Wilderness includes lovely, lush wetlands, meadows and mid- to low-elevation forest. The fact that the area is important to cattle grazing and some motorized routes (used primarily by ranchers) may explain why the West Elks Wilderness boundary did not protect this landscape. CPP proposes a National Conservation Area that would allow existing uses and habitat improvement projects while protecting the area from destructive activities.
